SJP Presents at the Pro-Bono Institute Annual Conference 03.09.25
On February 27, 2025, Senior Staff Attorney Rachel Goodman conducted a workshop on "Advocating for the Educational Rights of Confined Youth" at the Pro-Bono Institute (PBI) Annual Conference, this year held in Washington, DC.
The PBI Annual Conference is one of the legal community's premier pro bono events, offering sessions for seasoned pro bono leaders and volunteers as well as newcomers to the field, networking opportunities, and special events with pro bono visionaries. Hundreds of participants from law firms, legal departments, and public interest organizations from around the world were in attendance at this year’s event.
Rachel's workshop provided an overview of advocacy and litigation strategies for safeguarding the educational rights of youth while they are confined and as they reenter the community. It also explored how such strategies can be used to secure better outcomes in individual criminal proceedings and in decarceration efforts generally. Finally, the session included a discussion of SJP’s experience litigating Charles H. v. District of Columbia.
